Business Affairs Diversity Initiatives

VC Business Affairs promotes equal employment opportunity by sponsoring career development and educational programs that target University staff employees and outreach programs that target potential employment applicants.  Because many of the programs developed by the VC Business Affairs area are in support of, and available to all staff at UCSD,  individual departments within VC BA  craft an array of professional development resources in support of the staff in that unit.  Some examples are included below.  Campus-wide programs are advertised broadly to ensure diverse participation including all ethnic groups, women, veterans, and people with disabilities.  Human Resources, a VC Business Affairs department, is working in partnership with the HR Council which has representation from all VC areas to develop a Succession Planning Business Plan and encourage sharing of succession planning strategies and resources.

Campus-Wide Programs emerging from VC BA include:

Career Connection

UCSD Career Connection career development program is committed to supporting the promotion and retention of UCSD staff located on Campus, at SIO and with UCSD Healthcare.  Its objective is to provide UCSD staff at all levels the career development tools to aid them in achieving greater job satisfaction, current job skill development or enhancement, and lateral or upward mobility within the organization.  This focused, targeted, effort has been accomplished in collaboration with the Campus and Medical Center human resources departments, SIO, SOM, and other campus interests. Career Connection resources include career development workshops, mentoring, individual career consultations, information interview referrals, financial assistance for training upon promotion to position titles covered by the Internal Recruitment Program and mock job interviews. Currently, there are 1,700 active Career Connection participants. There have been over 2,000 promotions among the Career Connection participants.

Staff Equal Opportunity Enrichment Program

The University of California, San Diego, strives to foster a learning community for staff that supports education, training, and professional development. Continuous learning enhances our capacity to perform and builds our sense of community. It enables all of us to acquire skills to keep pace with the fast-changing demands that emerge from campus growth, advancing technology, and the challenges we take on in pursuing career growth within the University.

The University provides many opportunities and avenues for training and professional development internally (e.g., classroom training and online learning), and recognizes the importance of funding to make additional opportunities available.

The Staff Equal Opportunity Enrichment Program (SEOEP) administers training and career development funds for individuals and departments.

UC San Diego Community Outreach Program

Participation in career fairs and community forums has been a focus of Business Affairs units this year and the VCBA continued to sponsor and participate in both business and employment outreach fairs to recruit diverse job seekers.  Most Business Affairs units have representation on the UCSD Outreach Council and more plan to join in the coming year.  In addition to career fairs, Business Affairs units reach out to the community by attendance at events such as the Business and Education Direct Connection Showcase, the Grossmont Culinary Arts Program Dinner, Emergency and Safety Expo, Pacific Southwest Safety and Health Conference, the Biomedical Research Vendor Fair and the American Indian Culture Days.  For information about upcoming Outreach Events, please view the UC San Diego Community Outreach Calendar:

Local VCBA Progams include:

STRIVE
(Business and Financial Services)

The STRIVE program is a BFS initiative to address succession planning and pro-actively encourage the development of future leaders and managers by providing participants with intensive and accelerated professional and career development opportunities, as well as mentorships with members of the BFS Executive Team and/or BFS Leadership Team.

Law Enforcement Explorer Academy
(Campus Police)

The Law Enforcement Explorer Academy is held for young adults 14 – 20 years old who are interested in the field of Law Enforcement.  Conducted by the San Diego County Law Enforcement Explorer Advisors’ Association, this Academy gives these individuals an opportunity to learn skills associated with police work. The Explorer Academy has been an annual event for the past 33 years. Explorers from all over the State of California, Hawaii, Nevada, Wyoming and Washington attend this week long event. The Academy is an opportunity for an Explorer to attend a shorter version of a real Police Academy. The Academy teaches our youth of today how to become the leaders of tomorrow. Whether they go on to a career in law enforcement or just a productive member of our society, the Explorer Academy will be an event they will never forget.

Emergency Management Facilities Open House/Tours
(Environmental Health & Safety)

Quarterly, students from San Diego State University, City College, Mesa College and UCSD tour the Emergency Management Facility.  These tours have been conducted routinely each quarter since the 1997 construction of the facility.  The tours occur as part of Environmental Biology course curriculum offered through each of the above named colleges and provide an overview of how UCSD’s Hazardous Chemical, Radioactive, Medical and Universal Wastes are processed and disposed of according to federal, state, and local regulations.  A question and answer period is conducted by trained professionals in each of these waste categories.

UCSD/Urban Corps Partnership
(Environmental Health & Safety)

Coordinated through Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) UCSD and the Birch Aquarium at Scripps (BAS) have worked closely over the last five years on projects aimed at the protection of water quality along the La Jolla Shores coastline.  In 2007, UCSD/SIO partnered with Urban Corps of San Diego to train Urban Corps members in storm water pollution prevention management skills including implementing source control best management practices and conducting pollutant load reduction assessments in a watershed.  Urban Corps is dedicated to providing job training and educational opportunities for young men and women 18 to 25 years old from disadvantaged inner-city communities; job opportunities that also conserve our natural resources.  As part of this partnership, Urban Corps members were trained to implement aspects of the UCSD/SIO Storm Water Pollution Reduction Program and to conduct pollutant load reduction evaluations in the watershed that discharges into the ASBS.

UCSD Extension International Business Students @ A&PS
(Auxiliary & Plant Services)

Auxiliary & Plant Services (A&PS) partners with UCSD Extension to place International Business Students in the Human Resource Office of A&PS.  This helps the students satisfy the volunteer internship component of the Certificate Program in Business Essentials.  A&PS’s Human Resource department has partnered with UC Extension for the last three years, during which time, approximately ten students have been placed and while in the office, perform human resources related duties.  These duties include: screening electronic applications, preparing interview packets for interview panel members, participating on interview panels (as an observer) and giving their feedback after interviews are completed.  The feedback is invaluable given from the perspective of comparison between their home country and ours.  We have been honored sharing teaching and training time with students from China, Japan, Korea, Thailand and Turkey.  This experience gives value and enrichment to our business lives.
