UCSD Health Sciences Diversity Initiatives

VC Health Sciences is committed to diversity at all levels of the
organization and addresses equity, inclusion and diversity by focusing
on the availability of women, minorities and other underrepresented
groups among those promotable, transferable, and trainable in Health
Sciences. VC Health Sciences (VCHS) has embarked on an aggressive
succession planning and career development strategy and have created a
learning environment that generates promotional opportunities for all staff.

VCHS diversity initiatives utilize succession planning and recruitment
strategies that enhance the workforce at all levels of the organization.

Functional Area Training Programs -"A-Z" Training: In 2004, VC Health
Sciences designed, developed and implemented functional area training
programs that focused on cultivating junior staff. The year long program
provides hands on, operational training to VCHS staff. Employees new
to a functional area, interested in cross training opportunities, and
interested in career development in a new functional area are
encouraged to attend.

Student Apprenticeship Program (SAP): VC Health Sciences has developed
a robust internship/recruitment tool for UC San Diego. The goal of the
SAP program is to recruit and train undergraduate juniors and seniors who
are interested in a career at UCSD. Students are placed in a VCHS
department for up to 1 year, have the opportunity to gain practical
work experience and are more competitive for vacant positions at UCSD upon
graduation. VCHS has a SAP Coordinator who administers this program.

In just over two years the program has gone from 7 openings to 60
openings per quarter and has proven to be a great recruitment tool for VCHS
departments who have entry level positions.

Career Prep Summer Internship Program (C-Prep): The C-Prep program is
a summer apprenticeship program for high school, community college or
state or UC college students interested in an on-campus position at
UCSD for the summer. The purpose of the program is to increase diversity by
opening up campus positions to diverse populations in the San Diego
community. This pilot program started with over 40 positions across
campus and includes other VC areas, Business Affairs, and Marine
Sciences. This program is a recruitment/succession planning strategy
designed to generate interest in UCSD as a future employer, increase
staff morale by encouraging UCSD employees to tell a friend about
summer opportunities and teach worklife and career development skills to
students to prepare them for future positions. Students received 3
hrs of career development training prior to their placement in the departments.

VC Health Sciences Office of Diversity and Community Partnerships
supports innovative programs that enhance the academic, clinical,
scholarly and advocacy skills of middle school, high school, community
college, undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, graduate and medical
students. Our program participants acquire the skills and knowledge
they need to become successful members of a health professions workforce
that reflects the economic, social and geographic diversity of the State of
California.

VC Health Sciences Faculty Development: The National Center for
Leadership in Academic Medicine brings together a group of junior
faculty for a seven-month program that includes faculty development
workshops, a junior/senior mentoring relationship based on a
professional development contract, academic strategic career planning,
and individual academic performance counseling sessions. The program
emphasizes an understanding of the UCSD Health Sciences educational
mission as well as the research and clinical practice environment.
