Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?

On February 2, 2009, from 12-1 PM, Dr. Sandra Daley, M.D., will talk about "Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?," as part of the UCSD Biomedical Library lunchtime seminar series.

Dr. Daley will discuss racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare, disparities that occur in the context of broader historic and contemporary, and social and economic inequalities. She will also talk about the social determinants of health and how they are related to health disparities. During her talk, Dr. Daley will refer to the findings of the 2002 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, "Unequal Treatment: What Health Care System Administrators Need to Know about Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Healthcare."

She is Associate Chancellor and Chief Diversity Officer at UCSD and Clinical Professor of Pediatrics in the UCSD School of Medicine. She is the Principal Investigator for the UCSD Comprehensive Research Center of Excellence in Health Disparities. The Center is funded by the National Institute of Health's National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities. The Center promotes training and research on health issues affecting populations at risk for experiencing health disparities. In addition to conducting basic science, clinical and community-based applied research, faculty and staff of the Center have designed, implemented, evaluated and obtained funding for post-baccalaureate, community college, and middle and high school academic enrichment and research methodology training, and faculty development programs.

Dr. Daley is an alumna of both the UCSD School of Medicine and the Kellogg Leadership Fellowship Program.

Space is limited so RSVP as soon as possible to Vicky Anderson at vkanderson@ucsd.edu.  Feel free to bring a discreet lunch; cookies and water will be provided.
