UC San Diego funds two Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellowships each year. The Chancellor's Office supports one of the fellowships, and the other is supported by the Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. The Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellow is selected from the pool of applicants who identified mentors at UC San Diego and submitted their applications to the University of California President's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. The Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellowship applications are reviewed by Faculty Equity Advisors.
The Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Academic Diversity offers postdoctoral research fellowships and faculty mentoring to qualified scholars in all fields whose research, teaching and service will contribute to the diversity and equal opportunity at the University of California. These contributions may include public service addressing the needs of our increasingly diverse society, efforts to advance equitable access to higher education for women and minorities, or research focusing on underserved populations or understanding issues of racial or gender inequalities. The program is seeking applicants with the potential to bring to their academic careers the critical perspective that comes from their nontraditional educational background or an understanding of the experiences of members of groups historically underrepresented in higher education.
Awards and Tenure
Awards will be made to applicants who show promise for tenure-track appointments on the UC San Diego campus. Each award is for a 12 month period generally beginning July 1. A renewal of a fellowship for an additional year is contingent on demonstration of academic productivity and participation in program events. The fellowship will be for up to two academic years, in residence at the UC San Diego campus. If a selected candidate has received an offer for a ladder- rank position at the time of selection, the fellowship will be awarded for one year, without renewal.
The annual award provides a salary of $40,000–$50,000 per year depending on the field and level of experience. The award also includes health insurance, vision and dental benefits, 24 days of paid time off and up to $4,000 for research-related and program travel expenses. Each award is for a 12-month period, renewable for one year upon demonstration of academic productivity and participation in program events.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents at the time of application and must hold or receive a Ph.D. by the start of the appointment on July 1, 2014. University of California Ph.D. recipients should not apply to work with faculty of the department from which they received their Ph.D.
Faculty Hiring Incentive
Fellowship recipients are eligible for a hiring incentive program for faculty appointments at the University of California campuses.
Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellows are expected to 1) focus full-time on research and avoid other commitments such as teaching as outlined in the teaching Guidelines for UC President’s Post-doctoral Fellows, 2) meet regularly with assigned faculty mentors, 3) attend annual academic retreat.
All applicants for the UC San Diego Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program should submit their application to the University of California President's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program at http://ppfp.ucop.edu/info/how-to-apply/index.html. The mentor's letter should address the department's future hiring plans and the applicant's potential for appointment at UC San Diego. Applications must be completed online by November 1, 2013.
Awards will be announced in March and April 2014. Questions about the application process may be directed to the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion: email@example.com, 858-822-3542.
