KEIARA AUZENNE is the Diversity Initiatives Coordinator for the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. This is a new position at Scripps and she is tasked with improving campus climate and addressing issues of equity, diversity and inclusion for students, staff and faculty at Scripps. Keiara is also the Co-founder and Director of a monthly Clean Slate Clinic that provides assistance formerly incarcerated individuals seeking to expunge their criminal records, and the Vice-Chair of the San Diego Reentry Roundtable. She is a San Diego native and a member of the California Bar, ABA, San Diego Lawyer’s Club, and San Diego Chapters of the ACLU and the NAACP. Keiara obtained her JD from UCLA (specialization in Critical Race Studies). She also holds an MBA from the Monterey Institute of International Studies and BAs in Political Science and Business Economics from UC Santa Barbara.


APRIL L. BJORNSEN is the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs in the Graduate Division at UC San Diego and has served in this capacity since 2009. Her responsibilities include diversity outreach, recruitment, and retention, as well as oversight of the graduate admissions process. She is dedicated to the outreach, recruitment, and retention of a diverse graduate student body. To that end she is the program director on the UC San Diego Alfred P. Sloan Foundation University Center for Exemplary Mentoring (UCEM) grant under Principal Investigator Kim E. Barrett. She also oversees the a UC-HBCU Initiative grant, the UC San Diego Howard Partnership for Graduate Success, under Principal Investigator Gentry Patrick. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from UC Irvine and her secondary teaching credential from Eastern Washington University.


LUIS R. CASTELLANOS MD, MPH is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine and recently appointed Director of Diversity in Medicine and Faculty Outreach at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. Dr. Castellanos believes that it is important to improve diversity and promote inclusion in the medical field so that we can better serve members of our community. Dr. Castellanos graduated from UC Davis summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry and earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at UC San Diego and after finishing his medical training, Dr. Castellanos moved back to Boston where he was a Fellow in Minority Health Policy at Harvard University/Commonwealth Fund Program.


DANIELLE R. DAWSON, JD, MBA is the Executive Director of Development in the Office of Gift Planning at UC San Diego. Dani has successfully implemented an enhanced stewardship program and increased the unit’s campus and community presence through strategic outreach. Dani has a true passion for helping people achieve their philanthropic goals through creative and thoughtful planning. Dani earned her JD at Chapman University School of Law and her MBA at the University of Phoenix. She is the Immediate Past President of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, San Diego Chapter and currently serves as the Vice President of Inclusion.



TAMMY N. DEARIE currently serves as Associate University Librarian for Enterprise Services at UC San Diego where she is responsible for the library-wide services of Business & Finance, Capital Planning, Facilities, Human Resources, Information Technology Services, Internal Communications, and Safety & Security. The Library’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee, Community Building Committee, and Environmental Sustainability Committee are part of her portfolio. She has served on numerous committees at the national level and system wide within the University of California. She is currently working on a book of case studies in academic leadership in libraries and she is a member of the editorial boards for the Journal of Access Services and the Journal of Interlibrary Loan, Document Delivery & Electronic Reserves. Ms. Dearie earned her Master of Library & Information Science from the UCLA and her BA in history with a minor in women’s studies from the UC San Diego.


JESSE DEWALD is an engineer, educator and entrepreneur. As director of the EnVision Arts & Engineering Maker Studio, he helps develop educational projects, works directly with faculty and teaching assistants, and empowers students to use the creative abilities to the fullest extent possible. Before joining UC San Diego in 2015, DeWald helped design and implement a fast-growing, NSF-funded engineering education program for high school students at the University of Texas at Austin. DeWald has more than eight years of industry work experience in research and development, large-scale manufacturing and product design. He earned his mechanical engineering degree at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City.


DOUGLAS P. EASTERLY, ED.D. is the Dean of Academic Advising, John Muir College at UC San Diego. Born and raised in San Diego. Doug moved to Santa Cruz at eighteen to study English and American Literature at UC Santa Cruz, was trained as an activist by a community of student and staff mentors. After graduating from UC Santa Cruz, he worked with the Academic Excellence Program, a math and science program focused on supporting first-generation and historically underrepresented students in introductory STEM courses. In 2000, Doug returned to San Diego and built a career at UC San Diego in academic advising - first at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, then at John Muir College before returning to school to complete a Doctorate in Education in Teaching and Learning at UC San Diego.



KIMBERLY L. ELIAS joined UC San Diego’s Teaching + Learning Commons in Spring 2016 as the first Engaged Learning Tools Coordinator. Working closely with the Registrar’s Office, Career Services, and other campus partners, Kimberly is responsible for further implementing and coordinating efforts of the suite of Engaged Learning Tools, which includes the Enhanced Electronic Transcript, Co-Curricular Record (CCR), Portfolium, and REAL Portal. Kimberly comes to UC San Diego from Canada, where she coordinated and implemented the Co-Curricular Record (CCR) at the University of Toronto, co-founded the national Canadian CCR Professionals Network, and completed her master’s thesis on employer perceptions of co-curricular engagement and the CCR at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto.


SHARON E. R. FRANKS, PH.D. has served UC San Diego since 1993. As Director, Research Proposal Development Service (RPDS), Sharon works with faculty members and staff throughout campus to facilitate the development of large, interdisciplinary research proposals to public and private sponsors. Since the establishment of RPDS in 2009, Sharon has contributed to the development of proposals with budget requests totaling more than $900 million. Among Sharon’s other responsibilities in the area of research development are management of the campus’ limited-submissions process, design and implementation of professional development activities for early- and mid-career investigators in the area of grantsmanship, and strategic planning for the identification and dissemination of funding opportunities. Sharon holds a B.A. in Earth Sciences from Dartmouth College and a Ph.D. in Oceanography from Oregon State University.


JESSICA A. HILT is a geek socialite. She is the technical outreach and program analyst for the Information Technology Services department (ITS). Prior to UC San Diego. Jessica was the Director of Support & Training for CompleteCampaigns.com and Aristotle, Inc. She helps with RailsBridge San Diego, which teaches women how to code in Ruby on Rails. She is passionate about users, community building, and minorities in technology. In her “spare” time, she writes fiction and teaches creative writing. 



VALITA L. JONES serves as the Program Manager, for STEM Education Initiatives in the School of Medicine at the Center for Investigations of Health and Education Disparities (CIHED). She holds an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, an M.A. in Postsecondary Educational Leadership and BA degrees in both Psychology and Africana Studies. Dr. Jones is an African Centered Social Scientist and Educator. She studies and teaches about human development and consciousness as it pertains to engagement, leadership and cultural development. As the developer of the Conscious Leadership model, she is also a Research Associate at the Consciousness Quotient Institute.


HENRI F. MIGALA was born in Paris and immigrated to the United States as a child. With a MA in sociology/anthropology from the University of Texas Arlington, a MPH from the University of North Texas Health Sciences Center and a doctorate in education from San Diego State University, Dr. Migalanow serves as the Director of UC San Diego International House. Having worked in international health and development in over 20 countries, including with the UN World Health Organization, and as an administrator at a medical school and a community college, Dr. Migala has a wealth of international and educational experience.



VICTOR H. MINCES, PH.D. studied physics at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, later obtaining his PhD in Computational Neurobiology at UC San Diego. Victor is now a project scientist in the Department of Cognitive Science in UC San Diego where he studies the role of music in cognitive development and education. Victor has always been interested in helping children and adolescents in all communities have access to great education experiences. He is a co-founder of UC San Diego Neuroscience Outreach Program, which in more than ten years has served thousands of students. He has recently founded Listening to Waves, a program for students to learn science through the science of music. Listening to Waves has reached hundreds of students in school settings, after school programs, and science fairs. He is interested in increasing the connections between universities and the local K-12 community. 


JOYCE M. SHORT, MBA, CWDP is a Program Manager at UC San Diego Extension, Business & Professional Programs. Joyce graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in Economics from UCLA and was a recipient of the Chancellor’s Service Award. She obtained her MBA with a specialization in International Business from San Diego State University. Joyce is a Certified Workforce Development Professional (CWDP) and has an interest in fostering an individual’s pursuit of professional goals through continuous, lifelong learning. She is the daughter of first generation immigrants from the Philippines, who instilled the values of higher education, inclusion and respect as pathways to the American dream.



ELAINE G. TANAKA, MD is an Assistant Clinical Professor, Non-Salaried in the Department of Surgery at UC San Diego.  Her specialization is in Breast Care and she teaches residents and medical students. She created the Breast Program at the VA Hospital (MDBrST) and is an advocate for Women’s Health. She serves on the steering committee for Critical Gender Studies at UC San Diego. She is volunteer faculty advisor for multiple UC San Diego undergraduate and medical student groups (APAMSA, MedICamp, AMWA).  She founded the San Diego Chapter of the UCSD Medical Alumni Association, and the Nonprofit Compassion Breast.



MICHELLE A. TILLMAN currently serves as the Associate Director of Industry Engagement at UC San Diego’s Career Center. She works primarily with our top employers to recruit our students in the Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities, for entry-level full-time and internship positions. She also serves as the point of contact for employers recruiting our diverse student populations, including our student veterans. Michelle is a first generation college graduate, proud daughter of a 20+ year Navy Veteran, and product of parents who immigrated to the U.S. Michelle graduated Magna Cum Laude from the UC San Diego with Bachelors in Business Administration, specialization in Marketing, and minor in Spanish on a full-tuition scholarship. She pursued a graduate degree from USD in Counseling, specialization in Career Counseling. Since graduating 10 years ago, she has dedicated her life’s work to giving back to her community and paying it forward.


EMILY M. TRASK, PH.D has served in Student Affairs at the UC San Diego for 15 years, most recently as the Executive Director of the Center for Student Involvement at the UC San Diego, with responsibility for student organization advising, Greek Life, communication and leadership development programs, community service initiatives, and campus wide events. Her areas of academic interest include college student development, student engagement, leadership development, civic engagement and service-learning, and professional development in student affairs. Emily earned her doctorate in Leadership Studies with an emphasis in Higher Education Leadership from the USD, where her dissertation research focused on new student affairs professionals' use of advising strategies that promote self-authorship among college students. She has a Masters degree in Public Administration and a B.A in Philosophy from the University of Missouri - Columbia.
