Dear Colleagues and Community members,
Welcome to Diversity Matters. We are delighted to launch this important website to provide insight into the diversity and diversity-related activities at UC San Diego. You will find news about our diversity efforts and information about the work of the many people committed to advancing the interests of a diverse campus community.
Diversity Matters will highlight and support the activities of Associate Chancellor and Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) Jorge Huerta. Professor Huerta, a member of our faculty for more than 30 years and holder of the Chancellor’s Associates Endowed Chair III, accepted this important leadership position on January 1, 2005. He is widely known as an authority on contemporary Chicano and U.S. Latino Theatre and is an acclaimed professional director. His appointment as CDO followed recommendations by both the Chancellor’s Diversity Council and the Senate-Administration Task Force on Underrepresented Faculty to appoint a campus-wide CDO.
Professor Huerta acts as an important liaison between the Chancellor’s Office and the faculty, staff, administration, and our students. He focuses on programmatic options for the University’s diversity efforts, and he brings a focused and unique perspective on how UC San Diego can expand its reach locally, nationally, and internationally. His commitment to involving all communities in shaping UCSD’s future enriches the quality of campus life.
I encourage you to become involved with our diversity activities. Share your perspective and knowledge as we work together to ensure a welcoming environment for everyone in our UC San Diego family!
With warm regards,
Marye Anne Fox
Chancellor
