Strategic Plan for Inclusive Excellence

Transformation takes collective genius. Imagine what we can achieve when we unite our efforts to create a community with heart.

We need your diverse perspectives and talents as we begin to shape the future of UC San Diego. Your input will serve as the foundation for the Strategic Plan for Inclusive Excellence, led by the Office for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. Together with feedback already received, the plan will map the pathway to a more inclusive university.

Our vision is to create a learning and working environment where all feel welcomed and valued, which in turn leads to excellence in the classroom and workplace. We believe all members of our campus community deserve respect and equal opportunity to thrive. And throughout this process, we will be transparent and proactive in inspiring campus wide engagement.

Your ideas are important, and we are here to listen. There are many ways you can participate.

  • Submit your ideas at one of the booths around campus.
  • Take part in a small focus group.
  • Speak up at a town hall meeting.
  • Join one of our interactive workshops, seminars and social events.
  • Become a campaign ambassador and encourage involvement among others on campus.

Your Ideas: Already Making Waves

Inclusion is intentional and a diversity of voices is critical to our success at UC San Diego. That’s why we have been meeting regularly with campus community members to get your input on shaping the future of diversity and inclusion at UC San Diego through the Strategic Plan for Inclusive Excellence. See what we’ve been up to below!

Summer 2018 Advocates & Influencers Forums

They are in a big conference room.The Advocates and Influencers Summer Forums took place on August 14 and August 20. Vice Chancellor Becky Petitt addressed campus leaders, sharing with them components of the accountability reporting process and the core tenets that will guide our work in advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion: access and success, climate, and accountability. Grouped by VC areas, participants responded to the following questions:

 

  1. What are the roadblocks in higher education to achieving these core tenets? Which ones are present at UC San Diego?
  2. Discuss at least one action step for each tenet: Access and Success, Climate, Accountability to take in your VC area.

These ideas will be shared with their VCs when VC Petitt meets with them to prepare them for accountability reporting.

Spring 2018 Advocates & Influencers Meeting

AVC Diane Forbes-Berthoud is at the podium on stage and there is a presentation on the screen. everyone is sitting at round conference tablesIn the SP18 meeting, Advocates gathered to discuss the state of EDI in their units, learned more about the progress of the Strategic Plan and saw a draft of our first-ever diversity report. The diversity report will provide an overview of the current state of diversity at UC San Diego. Topics include: Leadership in Equity, Diversity and Inclusion; Teaching and Research in Equity, Diversity and Inclusion; and Women @ UC San Diego. As well as sections on: institutional support of equity, diversity and inclusion; staff contributions to equity, diversity and inclusion; and future opportunities for the Office for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.

Advocates and Influencers Strategic Plan Winter Forum

We met with Advocates and Influencers again for a second time in this process. Advocates and Influencers are staff, students, and faculty who are already engaged in and working on climate initiatives across campus, including diversity and inclusion-specific initiatives. They have been campus ambassadors supporting our Communication and outreach efforts to get the word out about the Strategic Plan so that everyone can get involved! Attendees learned new leadership skills in equity, diversity, and inclusion and shared their involvement their divisions and departments, campus-wide. The Vice Chancellor’s Office for EDI also gave an update on the Strategic Planning process and discussed next steps for the Strategic Plan. Look out for more ways to give your input in Winter 2018 and a draft in Spring 2018!

Campus Launch of the UC San Diego Strategic Plan for Inclusive Excellence

If one thing changes, everything changes. The Campus Launch was a call to action for each person at our university to recognize their role and responsibility in making UC San Diego an inclusive place where all have an equal opportunity to achieve. You gave us your input through IdeaWave and campus forums in the fall. We hope you will continue to do so at forums and at diversity@ucsd.edu! With your ideas in mind, the first draft of the Strategic Plan for Inclusive Excellence will be written in Winter 2018. We look forward to your feedback and additional ideas on that document in Spring 2018. Through our collective genius, we can build a comprehensive strategic roadmap to guide UC San Diego into the future.
