About the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
At the UC San Diego Office of the Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (VC–EDI), we believe that true excellence is achieved through productive relationships among people of diverse perspectives. Creativity and innovation prosper when the collective talents of our students, faculty, and staff are joined together in an environment that is open and inclusive. We define greatness by our ability to work together in a climate of shared respect, where diverse perspectives are valued and opportunities for growth and self-reflection exist for all. VC-EDI works in partnership with other Vice Chancellor areas to ensure that students, faculty, and staff find community and self-empowerment, regardless of heritage, orientation, or situation.
Central to the purpose of the Office of the VC–EDI is to ensure that our community is one of equal opportunity, where mutual respect and cross-cultural collaboration is fostered and open dialogue is encouraged. It is our mission to provide leadership, build capacity, and forge partnerships to facilitate shared responsibility for creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive campus in which students, faculty, and staff can thrive.
The VC–EDI, through partnership and collaboration, directs the campus efforts relative to diversity initiatives, which includes the work of the Campus Community Centers, as well as the efforts of two Associate Vice Chancellors for Faculty Diversity and Equity.
About the Associate Vice Chancellors for Faculty Diversity and Equity
Our Associate Vice Chancellors for Faculty Diversity and Equity (AVC-FDEs) are experienced campus leaders, who provide training and support to Faculty Equity Advisors (FEAs) and are available to any faculty member, as well as deans, chairs, and search committees for guidance on issues related to diversity, equity, mentoring, and family accommodation policies. AVC-FDEs also monitor campus demographics on faculty recruitment, hiring, and retention.
About the Campus Community Centers
As units within the VC–EDI, the Campus Community Centers include: the Black Resource Center, the Cross-Cultural Center, the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Resource Center, the Raza Resource Centro, and the Women’s Center. The Campus Community Centers affect institutional change by challenging traditional notions and historical structures of diversity and equality. As places of engagement and belonging they facilitate interactive learning, promote self-awareness, foster leadership, and encourage dialogue. Working with undergraduate and graduate students, staff, faculty, alumni, and the San Diego community, the centers contribute significantly toward the evolution of a socially just campus climate.
