UC San Diego Heritage Celebrations

UC San Diego celebrates state and federally-recognized heritage months that are coordinated and executed by established campus volunteer committees. Each celebration is provided central administrative support by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (VC EDI).

The following list of celebrations have been historically acknowledged, supported, and volunteer-led at UC San Diego, and will continue to receive support. This guidance is effective as of November 2023.

The recognized volunteer-led campuswide heritage celebrations are:

  • Latinx Heritage Month (October) and César E. Chávez Celebration (April)
  • Native American Heritage Month Celebration and Outstanding Native Triton Award (November)
  • Black History Month and Scholarship Brunch (February)
  • Asian and Pacific Islander American Heritage Celebration Month and Scholarship Awards (May)
  • Juneteenth (June)

These heritage celebrations receive financial support from the Chancellor’s Office and Office of the Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, including, when authorized, approved leave time for staff.

Federal and State Heritage Month Celebrations

Any UC San Diego-recognized organization wishing to establish heritage celebrations not on this list is free to do so, with their own funding and volunteer support.

UC San Diego-recognized organizations seeking financial and administrative support to host other U.S. Federal or State recognized celebrations on campus, may propose a new heritage celebration by emailing diversity@ucsd.edu.
