Accountability

At UC San Diego, we are establishing processes and structures that emphasize accountability to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. We know that when we prioritize transparency and trust within our community, greater student, faculty, and staff success is possible in all areas of campus life. Through a collective impact approach and a University-wide commitment to equity-minded data collection, we are moving closer to becoming a campus that embodies inclusive excellence in all that we do.
Expanding Accountability Through Data
We recognize our responsibility to approach data use with an equity-minded lens to protect our most vulnerable campus community members. We are working toward achieving inclusive excellence through our innovative accountability reporting process to support our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
The new iteration of the Strategic Plan for Inclusive Excellence: Accountability Process (Accountability Process) is a collective impact effort that combines elements of the prior accountability process, the Equity in the Major program review initiative, and the UC-wide SEA Change Initiative. The Accountability Process will now encompass three reporting cycles: academic units (including department chairs for the first time), non-academic units, and the Scripps Institution for Oceanography with Health and Health Sciences units.

In the 2022 iteration, units were asked to report on how they contribute to achieving our goal of becoming a Hispanic-Serving Institution (federal designation) and accomplishing the goals of our Black Academic Excellence Initiative, and in 2023, unit leaders are asked how they are supporting the implementation of the UC Gender Recognition and Lived Name Policy. The campus-wide efforts reported at our 2021 Strategic Accountability meetings were summarized in our 2022 EDI Best Practices report.

Highlights
- We are currently going into the third iteration of the Strategic Plan for Inclusive Excellence: Accountability Process comprised of three reporting cycles with more granularity and asking unit leaders to share how they have and will support university-wide goals to create a more inclusive UC San Diego.
- "In addition to creating UC San Diego’s first-ever Strategic Plan for Inclusive Excellence, Petitt has started a process to work with each vice chancellor and academic dean to discover where they are in their efforts to support diversity and inclusion. Each year the discussions become more targeted—first looking at the unit overall and then focusing on what each department has achieved and gaps that remain." - "Vice Chancellor Becky R. Petitt: Leading Transformational Change," UC San Diego Today
In 2020, the Center for Faculty Diversity and Inclusion (FDI) launched the first Academics@UCSD™ survey, sponsored by the Offices of the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and the Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. The survey tool was designed by the Office of Operational Strategic Initiatives (OSI) in collaboration with FDI, Institutional Research (IR), Academic Personnel Services (APS), and with faculty input. The survey asked questions related to academic welfare; department values, culture, and effectiveness; equity, diversity and inclusion; interpersonal behaviors; reward structures; and satisfaction with UC San Diego.

Investment in EDI Leadership
We are holding ourselves accountable as an institution to put our vision into practice by investing in leaders, committees, and faculty to oversee the progress of equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts across the disciplines.
Through a collective impact approach, we are transforming UC San Diego across units and departments. The following are examples of units and departments with committees dedicated to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion:
